CFP: Festschrift in Honour of Professor Janice Monk

The IGU Commission on Gender and Geography invites contributions for a Festschrift in honour of Professor Janice Monk for her immense contributions to geographies of gender and feminist geographies.

Jan Monk was among the first geographers to raise questions about the invisibility of women in the discipline of Geography in her seminal paper with Susan Hanson ‘On not excluding half of the human in human geography’ (Monk and Hanson 1982). Throughout her prolific and impactful career, Jan worked to highlight women’s experiences and to foreground the lens of gender within geographical research and knowledge production. She was committed to supporting feminist geographers, introducing them to relevant networks, promoting their research, and advocating for their inclusion and recognition within international groups, universities, and other academic bodies.

Jan Monk also worked tirelessly with Janet Momsen and other women geographers to initiate the International Geographical Union Commission on Gender and Geography. The Commission started as a task force and was finally granted status of a full commission in 1992. This Festschrift, to be published in 2022, will mark the 30-year anniversary of the IGU Commission on Gender and Geography. The publication will be an opportunity to recognize the immense contributions of Jan Monk through papers and essays in key areas she has contributed to within feminist geography.

We invite papers, essays and other contributions of 6000 to 8000 words in the following broad subthemes:

• Geography Teaching and Higher Education: Place-ing Gender and Feminist Geographies

• Women in Geography: Career Trajectories and Strategies to Survive and Thrive

• Gendered Landscapes: Reading Gender in Environmental Concerns

• Women’s Geographies of the Life Course: Work and Everyday Life

• Indigenous Geographies: Perspectives Beyond White/ Anglo Contexts
